Do you know about textile mills during the Industrial Revolution?
Q. I know this is a brain teaser. What was the life of typical worker that worked in a textile mill early during the Industrial Revolution. So that I can understand better, pretend that you worked in one of these textile mills. Write about your day.

A. Sorry I can't pretend but I can show you what was written about the conditions at those times: Workers Working conditions in the early British textile factories were brutal. Children, men, and women regularly worked 68-hour work weeks. Factories often were not well ventilated and became very hot in the summer. Worker health and safety regulations were non-existent. Workers who suffered debilitating injuries from work were simply dismissed without any compensation. The best that can be said for these conditions is that other work for unskilled, landless persons was less consistent throughout the year and from year to year, and offered less possibility for earnings growth for those who adapted well to the work. When I spoke with the local art museum, she thought my art would be best suited to textiles, and I thought that was a great idea. But I"m not sure how to go about doing this, and how to get started. A. You may want to contact design faculty in the various College Textile departments in the USA and Europe and ask if they would review a sample of your work and ask for their advice. The reference has a short list of USA textile related departments, but many colleges have small groups in their Design Departments so do a good web search. Also, groups like AATCC have design competitions.

Asked by Bilgehan - Sun Feb 15 00:16:36 2009 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. It really doesn't matter what camera you get. The lens is what matters with most pictures. For textiles, you may want a macro lens if there is any embroidery detail in the scarf. A true macro will allow you to capture the detail at life size. Many lenses say macro, but you have to look at the specifications to see if it is a 1:1 macro (a true macro) or not. But you can do what you want with just about any macro lens. If you want a camera and lens combo that can do what you want and be good for all-around use, I would say for the lens to get a Tamron 18-250. The lens is made in a mount for Sony, Nikon, Canon and Pentax I believe and costs $459. It is considered a macro, but is not a true macro. You can get an entry level DSLR for around $50 [cont.]

Asked by redsfan - Tue May 4 22:10:39 2010 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments

A. I have an Alpinestars textile jacket, it has been waterproof for over eight years (recently it has become showerproof only), it has CE approved armour, a removable fleece liner (toasty), well constructed. It has been involved in two minor but potentially nasty accidents, including a somersault over the front, there was no damage to the construction (although there was little abrasion in either incident which is were textile jackets fall down in protection performance). I do not know Teknic or Scorpion jackets. Downpoint it does tend to smell like a wet dog now that it is no longer completely waterproof. This is the closest current jacket I would recommend buying and fitting a spine protector too.
