A. From the first reference: Technical textile A general term used to describe a broad range of textiles that are designed for specific applications. These textiles include nonwovens, wovens, knits and film composites. The types of end-products usually associated with technical textiles are nonwovens and certain woven, knitted and film fabrics used in products, such as protective apparel (hazardous waste, fire, clean room, military, etc.), parachutes, hi-tech tenting materials, flags, automotive interior fabrics and housewrap - to name a few. Q. Dyed / bleached Cotton warp and cotton lycra weft fabric show bursting of lycra fils at several places. Fabric Plain woven 50s x 50s on Airjet / Projectile looms. Does lycra break at all in processing. The grey fabric is OK. The broken edges appear severed with sharp instrumets. Can anybody enlighten me on why this happens and what to do to avoid this.
Asked by ramaki u - Fri Nov 30 11:35:34 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. One possibility. Look at the fabric in the greige state under a good microscope. Look for needle like cuts resulting from the process. They will not be enough to cut the yarn, but will be more like a paper cut. After all that processing, the cuts are stretched, wetted, and pulled, so they eventually start breaking. This results from incorrect machine setting on the loom.

Examples of technical/SMART/green fabrics?
Q. Doing some textiles coursework and I need to show that I have considered using technical/SMART/green fabrics to make my final product (a screen divider, the screen is made of a wooden frame and fabric panels). The fabrics I consider need to relate to this product. Help please? x
Asked by Jenny - Sat Nov 15 08:39:11 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Green could be recyclable - how about yarn made from some funky material - plastic bottles perhaps. Or locally sourced - saves energy. Metal fabrics could be re-cycled/recyclable - some sort of sheer would be good - which looks solid when lit from one side, fairly transparent when lit from both sides.

is it wise to take an a level in a subject that you didn't take for gcse?
Q. i have always been a creative person, and i have always liked to dress differently. i began designing clothes in year 9 as part of an art project, and those designs, along with ones i have done more recently, have had very positive feedback. thing is, i didn't choose textiles as a gcse option, but am now considering fashion design as a career option. i am attempting to build up my skills in design, technical knowledge, materials and sewing, but would i survive throwing myself in at the deep end and choosing it as an a level, or would it be a better idea to enroll in a simpler evening textiles course, gcse or otherwise? my gcse options were french, music, business studies and drama. i will be choosing my a levels in december.

Options in year 9 - HELP!!?
Q. Hey, Im 14 and I have to pick my options soon. Im not bragging but I do well in all subjects (except PE and Drama which I hate any way!) and I don't know what options to pick. Its compulsary to take English, Maths, ICT, RE and 2 sciences of my choice but I have 3 more options and dont have a clue. I was thinking of taking either: all three sciences, history, geography, music, french, art, graphics, or textiles. Each take up 1 option and I am so far thinking about science, geography and art or french. People says you need to take french as it will get you far in life; does it?? A. Hmm a hard one! - I remember being in exactly your position! Well, like it or lot, a lot of colleges and employers do like you to have a language, so I think it would be smart to take French. Looking at a lot of your career choices - geography seems quite prominent so I might think about taking that as well. As for your last option I reckon either art or graphics, as these - again - are the basis for a lot of your careers options. Science is as well, but if you're already doing 2, I probably wouldn't waste an option on a third. That's the route I would take, but the decision's really personal so have a good think. My tips would be: - Look up some college websites, see what courses you'd be interested in and look at what they require.… [cont.]

You don't have to listen to a lot to be attracted to it. Babies, when they are listening to the recitation of Quran, fall asleep peacefully, so even they get peace from Quran. Quran is a miracle, its written in the Quran, so how can we deny it. When you are feeling the worst, all you have to do it listen to any verse of Quran and that would make you feel very different. That is why, it is said that when you are angry or feeling anger coming, recite any verse of Quran, because Quran is like water, it cleans you up and revives you. A. Actually listening to the Qur'an is very good for you, Quran restores soul calmness: The results of researches conducted over a group of volunteers from USA who were subject to a recitation of the Holy Quran were striking. A trace of a tranquilizing effect was recorded at a whole rate of 97%. Although many of these volunteers do not know Arabic, yet involuntary physiological changes that led notably to alleviate the acuity of tension they had before were observed in their nervous systems. Furthermore, an experiment of EEG during Quran rehearsal revealed that while listening to Quran, the encephalic waves moved from the fast pattern of vigilance (12-13) wave/ second to the slow pattern (8-18) wave/ second; indicating the state of deep… [cont.]

Q. My brother works for a Japanese multinational that sells Textile machinery. When there is chance of a big order, Japanese engineers visit Pakistan to answer technical questions. My brother was driving one Japanese Engineer. Usually he keeps cassettes of Pakistani music for long drives. But he had forgotten and had no cassette except for a recitation of holy Quran. When the Japanese insisted, he played that cassette. While returning, the Japanese asked for it and my brother happily gave it to him. The same Engineer came nearly after two years and met my brother. He asked for 5 cassettes. He said one of his friends also found peace in it. drawing perspective? problems?
Q. I have recently started drawing again - on holiday - and woudl like to keep up t he practise as it is a good challenge. At art college we were taught perspective - I haven't used it much since as i am a textile artist but realised I had forgotten the point about your own eye - staying in the same place - I can see that what I am doing wrong is to move my eyes - is there any trick for locating the edges of what you plan to draw. There is something that I am missing that I probably cant even verbalise so any hints at all would be great or easy websites I am not a technical person. At the time I learnt I did a really sweet picture of my kitchen so there seems to be a rule that I have forgotten.

A. All the above answers are great. Often the vanishing point is "off the page" - I will attach my surface to a larger board or paper and draw my vanishing point there, using a long ruler or string on a pin to refer back to that line. Also, working on a flat table or on your lap will confound all your efforts at keeping your perspective correct. Try using an easel that holds your work 90 degrees from the ground so you are looking at your surface straight on. Have fun!
