What are some good sewing machines and tips for starters?
Q. I have decided to start sewing, but i need some tips and some good brands of sewing machines for starters. Please Help!

A. I'm hooked on Brother sewing machines. They start at around $100 and go up from there. I've owned several brands over the years, and found that Brothers are very reliable and the easiest to learn. My advice is to start with something simple, like a pillow case, tablecloth, or apron. Get to know your machine and how to cut fabric and sew a nice straight line. Once you're confident with that, look for patterns marked "easy". Simplicity makes a line called "It's so easy" for adult and kids clothing, and accssories like tote bags and purses, that are great for beginners. Here's a couple of good sites with tips for beginning sewers; You can learn a LOT from those two sites.

Does any one here know about sewing machines?
Q. A friend of mine gave me a sewing machine and I need to get some needles for it. It is a JC Penny brand sewing machine model 0104. It is a old machine and I am having problems finding any information. Does anyone know about these machines or maybe where I can find information on it. Thanks. Also does anyone know where I can get the manual for it?

A. I'd try your local sewing machine store. They would be able to sell you the needles that fit and may have info on a manual or be able to show you ( bring the machine in!) in person how to, wind a bobbin, check the tension, oil it for you etc. good luck!

Can someone explain in simple terms the difference between a sewing machines and an overlock machine?
Q. I am going to start sewing but most of it will be simple straight stitching. No embrodiery or anything. I don't need a machine that does 2,002 stitches. Which machine would be for me? If you know of a certain machine too, I would greatly appreciate any advice? I am going to be doing alot of scrap fabric crafts for my home like quilted pillows and heming fabric.

A. Look at the seams on the shirt you are wearing right now... where the sleeves join to the body. Do you see how the threads are not only holding the sleeve there but they also wrap around the the entire seam? That is an over lock or serger. On a flat machine if you want something like that -- and that makes the seam stronger and more comfortable - then you actually have to sew the seam twice doubling the amount of time it takes to finish a garment. From that you say you will be mostly working with a regular machine would be fine but the decorative stitches might add an extra touch to your quilts so you just might want to consider those 2,002 stitches. But basically how the seams is finished is the difference in the two machines. And a… [cont.]

What are some good brands of sewing machines?
Q. My wife and I are celebrating our wedding anniversay in April. Aside from the romantic gift, I want to buy her a sewing machine as well. But I have absolutely no clue as to what brand is best and cost. Please help!!!

A. It depends on how much you want to spend, and whether or not she already sews. If she doesn't have a sewing machine and doesn't already sew I would get her a simple machine. I just got a Brother for Christmas that was only $150. I didn't really know how to sew and wanted something simple to start. Wal-Mart has them ranging from about $90-$250, all pretty basic sewing machines. If she already has a basic sewing machine and you are looking to get her an upgrade, I would go to the local sewing shop. Take a picture of the sewing machine she already has with you. I have found that the people at small shops are very helpful and informative. here is a link to Consumer Reports and their ratings on sewing machines. If you are not… [cont.]

I would like to start up a buisness repairing industrial sewing machines in New Zealand?
Q. Do you think there is any need for this? Or are there too many other qualified sewing machine mechanics there already?
Asked by Rachel - Mon May 4 16:33:38 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Well Rachel I really don't know about how much demand there is for such a business , about all I can suggest is that you contact a bunch of potential customers and ask them . Just be aware that as it is not their money on the line they may encourage you to open your business anyway in the hope of bringing in some competition for the repair industry.

Does anyone know anything about sewing machines vs sergers?
Q. I need to know if I can buy a sewing machine with a built in serger or are they always sold as separate machines? Thanks for any help I get! :)

A. I am assuming you want to purchase just one machine; or at least only one at this time. Your best bet is probably to start with a good zig-zag sewing machine. They will handle much more versatile projects than a serger. While there are electronic models that sell for several thousand dollars, you can get a good machine for under $900. How much you spend will depend on your projected usage and experience sewing . I basically sew on my sewing machine and finish seams on my serger... If you are doing... only... knit clothing for children that will have a limited life because children grow so quickly; you might be able to get by with a top of the line serger. I would recommend that you get... lessons... before you… [cont.]

Q. I have recently aquired what appears to be an antique singer sewing machine model # G7174698. I would appreciate any information anyone could share on this sewing machine.

A. You have a model 66 released on July 10,1919. There were 50,000 released that year alone. Made at the Elizabethport factory in Elizabeth, New Jersey. I have a couple, and even though they are probably the most common old machines around they are very good and strong. In nice condition its worth less than a hundred dollars. Nice in a nice cabinet maybe a couple hundred. If its not so nice condition it may still be worth 50.00 if it works good. Kind of cool aren't they. Have fun with it and learn how to work it. Good luck.

A. Distilled wisdom of many years of sewing, professionals and amateurs included. From what I've seen recently, Janome has the better track record of inexpensive sewing machines, and if you're looking in the $200-300 range, that would be where I'd encourage you to look. I've heard that Europro machines are very difficult to find parts for. Me, I sew on a midlevel Viking that's about 10 years old now; it's sewn miles of fabrics and has always worked well. New machines about equal to that one are in about the $600-800 range now. Go shopping. I'd strongly encourage you to go to local sewing machine shops, particularly those that repair machines on the premises and offer classes. You won't get that sort of support from the chain fabric… [cont.]

Do sewing machines come with foot pedals?

I thought everyone used them like I did in Home Ec. I searched on Amazon and only 3 are for sale and they don't look too reliable (maybe not even for sewing). A. Yes, they're standard with home sewing machines. No, please don't buy your girlfriend a sewing machine... give her a gift certificate. Here's why: What I want for beginners in sewing: - a machine that doesn't scare you - a machine that isn't balky (cheap new machines are often very balky or need adjustments often and are rarely repairable -- just too frustrating to learn on!) - very good straight stitch - good zigzag (4-5 mm is fine, more than that is gravy) - a method of making buttonholes that makes sense to you - adjustable presser foot pressure (which helps some fabric handling issues) - accessory presser feet that don't cost an arm and a leg (machines that use a "short shank foot" typically handle generic presser… [cont.]

A. Try a sewing machine shop, sometimes people trade in their old ones when they buy new ones. They may even be able to give you some more ideas on where to get a cheap sewing machine.

A. I believe you answered your own question. What good is a machine that will only sew together to layers of thin cotton? Take the money you were going spend on this machine and visit sewing shops to see what they can do for you. Tell them you have a limited budget or they will start by showing you the Rolls! Tell them what kind of sewing you want to do. A good sewing machine should be able to sew fabrics ranging from nylon to canvas. You want a machine that has a buttonhole feature and sews a nice even straight stitch. Ask to test what they offer. A used machine may be a good machine to start with.
