where can I find information on old sewing machines for maintenance?
Q. I'm from Guatemala, and I own 2 industrial sewing machines, one is a SINGER 251-1 AM355046 (thats the only number i found) an the other is an overlock S.p.A.V.Rimoldi & C. Milano 229-00-1.B made in Italy. the thing is that in Guatemala there aren't places that give maintenance to that kind of machines, and I need to learn how to do it myself, from needle them to put them to work; but i don't want to do it because I don't have the manual, or any guide, and I don't have any experience with sewing machines. Do anyone knows some place where i can find the manuals for this two machines, or some guides, or any forum where I can ask about??? Any information will be useful. tnxs.

What type of sewing machines are used at FIDM?
Q. I am pretty sure I am going to be attending FIDM this fall and am in need of a sewing machine update before I head out there. I was wondering if anybody knew what type of machines were used in their studios and labs. I thought it might be beneficial to have a similar machine to use when I had to do work at home. Otherwise does anybody have any sewing machine recommendations in general? Thanks for your help!

A. I believe they use industrials... but why not just call the campus you'll be at and ask? And local dealers may give significant discounts. PS: The Juki TL98q series uses standard industrial feet and is portable; there are other "portable industrials" around, too:

Where are some good places that can repair broken OLD sewing machines?
Q. I have an extremely old one (antique) and its missing a foot pedal, and I think I need it in order to work. Where or what types of places has knowledge in fixing old sewing machines? And are they pricey? Im trying if decide if I want to pay money to get my old one fixed or just buy a new one. Any information you have will help me! Thanks!! I don't know the make but its an antique and the brand is a Singer.

A. If it has a power pedal it is not an antique. Your local sewing machine dealer "may" be able to fix you up with one, but this can be expensive. Even then, you do not if it will work as there may be something else wrong with it. Buy a new machine.

How much to charge for used sewing machines?
Q. My mom recently passed away and I got the fun job of going through all of her belongings. She was really into arts and crafts and sewing etc. She has 2 sewing machines. One is a "White 1788" brand that she bought in 2000. The other one is a Euro-Pro 385x" and she bought it but NEVER used it so its brand new. What would they sell for? I am about to have a garage sale and I don't know what to price ANY of this arts and crafts stuff. So any help would be appreciated.
Asked by stacie9243 - Fri Jun 25 14:15:59 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The price of the Euro-Pro 385x" you can cut the price of it by 1/2 because that is what the sewing stores mark up sewing machines most times, Then you can take the 1/2 and cut it in 1/2 again and that is the value of the machine, even not used it is second hand.

A. Singer has a model that has to be connected to a computer for the embroidery feature to function. The start at about $500. This is a combo (sewing machine and embroidery machine - There are other brands that will embroider without being connected to a computer. Brother starts at about $500. This is also a combo - For this particular Brother model, in order to download designs from the Internet, you need a reader unit and card - PED Basic cost around $120. My first embroidery machine was a $500 Brother from Walmart (5 years ago). It is still humming along.

A. Portable home sewing machines are every bit as versatile as cabinet machines in the same class, and should be able to handle the tasks you've outlined. However, the hand-held machines are pretty worthless-- an office stapler would do as well. Maybe better. The brands of Indian machines I've seen advertized are not familiar to me, but here's my standard suggestions for beginners buying a machine: What I want for beginners in sewing: - a machine that doesn't scare you - a machine that isn't balky (cheap new machines are often very balky or need adjustments often and are rarely repairable -- just too frustrating to learn on!) - very good straight stitch - good zigzag (4-5 mm is fine, more than that is gravy) - a method of… [cont.]

Q. My wife is a very good seemstress, but she does not have a good reliable sewing machine. She wants a machine that is is very simple, very reliable, and of good quality. Any suggestions ?

A. I'm going against popular opinion and would recommend a Husqvana...go to a sewing machine store and look at the different brands and models and get a good one (the cheapest good one you can find). Husqvana is very reliable and as far as I know Singer machines are not even made by Singer anymore and haven't been for a long time...another company bought the rights to the name. I would suggest taking your wife with you to choose one since she is the one who knows what she is looking for.

What are good sewing machines for beginners?
Q. We have an old machine here but the parts are spread apart so I figure I will buy myself a new one to start. What are your recommendations for a good sewing machine? Where can I go online to see reviews or what ever I need to do to make an informed purchase? Thank you so much!

A. If you have not done much sewing or do not intend to do a lot of sewing I suggest an inexpensive machine. These can be found at Walmart or another similar department store. Most machines carried in quilt shops are more expensive though of much higher quality. A good inexpensive machine would be by Singer. Today they come with several types of stitches. I would suggest the barest minimum is a straight stitch and a zig zag stitch. If you intend to make clothes, a button hole stitch is helpful. I recommend Singer over Brother machines. I have had both and the Singer lasts much longer than Brother. If you prefer a better quality machine, pick up a quilting magazine and check out the websites of machines advertised there. Janome, Pfaff,… [cont.]

They start at about $400. With this one - you will also need to purchase a reader/writer unit and re-writable memory card. PED Basic is shown in the ad and it includes the card. Just be aware that as it is not their money on the line they may encourage you to open your business anyway in the hope of bringing in some competition for the repair industry.

Are there any good quality hand held sewing machines out there?
Q. I want to get a hand-held sewing machine because I personally don't like lugging out the machine every time I need it, then having it repeatedly get jammed and having to pay someone to fix it. It is a real pain especially seeing as I make very small things when using the sewing machine and don't require anything more than something that moves foreword, has a back stitch, and is able to sew through material such as fleece with easy. Does anyone have any suggestions?

A. You have a model 66 released on July 10,1919. There were 50,000 released that year alone. Made at the Elizabethport factory in Elizabeth, New Jersey. I have a couple, and even though they are probably the most common old machines around they are very good and strong. In nice condition its worth less than a hundred dollars. Nice in a nice cabinet maybe a couple hundred. If its not so nice condition it may still be worth 50.00 if it works good. Kind of cool aren't they. Have fun with it and learn how to work it. Good luck.

Q. My GF wants a sewing machine to design clothing and for jobs around the house, What should we be looking for?

A. Distilled wisdom of many years of sewing, professionals and amateurs included. From what I've seen recently, Janome has the better track record of inexpensive sewing machines, and if you're looking in the $200-300 range, that would be where I'd encourage you to look. I've heard that Europro machines are very difficult to find parts for. Me, I sew on a midlevel Viking that's about 10 years old now; it's sewn miles of fabrics and has always worked well. New machines about equal to that one are in about the $600-800 range now. Go shopping. I'd strongly encourage you to go to local sewing machine shops, particularly those that repair machines on the premises and offer classes. You won't get that sort of support from the chain fabric… [cont.]
