What's the best way to cover up my clipboard folder?
Q. I have a nice and sturdy clipboard folder. The thing is, the pattern on it is hideous and I'd like to cover it up with some more attractive paper or fabric. What glue can I use that won't make the paper or fabric sticky when it dries? Also, the clipboard has a narrow spine (1cm or 1/2 inch) so I'm worried about the new cover buckling when I open and close it. Tips?

A. Mod Podge would probably work best! You can also cover with three separate pieces instead of one piece wrapping around. Here's one idea for how to cover:

A. Nylon don't breathe and causes sweating. Cotton tends to stretch and the elasticity might wear out quicker.

Is it narrow minded to believe that we have only one soulmate in this lifetime?
Q. There are people who are of the opinion that in the course of a lifetime, a person will encounter several soulmates ... or people who were also made of the same "cosmic" fabric...
Asked by MachPen* `* . - Sun Jun 3 03:55:47 2007 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I do think it's silly, even if you strip away all the metaphysical attachments to the idea. People who cling to this idea of "this is the one!" usually set themselves up for an enormous let-down, because it raises your expectations about a person and a relationship so much that you just amplify the parts that aren't perfect. The relationships I've had that took off the fastest always came crashing down the hardest after a couple of months. Whether or not you want to believe in the concept of a "soulmate", I think what's narrow-minded is to assume that the only "good" relationships are the ones that never need any work or compromise. Obviously there are some relationships that aren't worth the effort, but even then I don't like this… [cont.]

Can a regular tailor alter jeans?
Q. Or, do they typically not work with heavy fabric like denim. I am not sure if their machines can handle it? I have 2 pair of jeans that I like but don't fit me correct through the leg, what would be nice if they could be taken in for a narrower leg. I was going to go to one of the regular tailors shops that you find on any street here in NYC.

A. A regular tailor can definitely alter your jeans. I've had it done many times. Ask around for recommendations from family or friends. See if anyone you know has had pants altered before.

A. What kinds of things are you shooting? How big do you need your background to be? For small objects, just use a bed sheet or a few yards of fabric (Walmart is good for cheap fabric). For larger objects and portraits, you'll want to get a nice muslin. Owen's Originals and Amvona have great prices of muslins and they're pretty good quality. Seamless paper will work well too. Try Adorama or B&H for that. As for colored lights, what you'll want to do is use a color gel on a strobe... this works best on grey or black backgrounds, not white. Again, these can be found on Adorama and B&H.

How to sew a firm ribbon to a stretch fabric?
Q. I have this problem - I've bought stretch velvet only because they didn't have regular in that color. Everything went OK with the garment and the stretch was even an advantage at one place, BUT I planned it to be lined with contrasting ribbon. It is a very stiff thing. Now, I have a rather narrow piece of fabric I want to line and even a slight unevenness is very visible. I tried hand stitching it many times, but always ended up with fabric rolling or rotating. Machine sewing was a tad more successful, but not that much. I tried stabilizing it with paper without success. It needs to have the exact proportion of the two, or it looks bad. Any tips how to cope with it? I need the ribbon there, It's pointless without it. Please, please help.
Asked by Martina - Sat Jul 10 16:46:58 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The only way to do this would be to stabilize the fabric so it remains stationary. Try on a scrap of the fabric and use iron-on interfacing for the stabilizer. If you had used a walking foot for the sewing, the layers of fabric would not have shifted.

Southwest give you non-alcholic beverage (coke, 7Up, water, coffee, etc) Southwest and JetBlue fly to major airport and secondary Airport (at least on the West Coast) ex.: Southwest is in LAX, SFO, SAN, LAS, ONT, OAK, BUR JetBlue is in LGB, ONT, BUR, LAS, OAK Southwest fly from West Coast (LAX) to Islip, Long Islandf(NY), but Jet Blue Fly from Long Beach (L.A.) to JFK. another ex.: Southwest non-stop from LAX to Chicago MDW Jet Blue non-stop from Long Beach to Chicago ORD all these are give and take. SkyBus is trying to do what Ryanair is doing in Europe. We have to wait and see if it will work in the US.

Baby slings / carriers - recommendations please? Wilkinet / Close Parent?
Q. I think I'd prefer a fabric carrier and have pretty much narrowed it down to the Close Parent one or the Wilkinet. Anyone got either of these? They seem to be somewhere in between the traditional Baby Bjorn type (buckles and straps) and the Mei Tai long-length-fabric tie up ones. I'm hoping to use it from birth for a few months. Any advice? I know a few of you will have tried at least a couple of different ones!

A. A nice compromise between a Baby Bjorn and a Mei Tai is a Belle Baby Carrier. It is very simple and your baby is right against you like with a Mei Tai, but your baby can face out like with the Bjorn. It is more comfortable than the Bjorn and very compact and simple. It uses rings for the waistbelt which are very strong and durable.

Dealing with textophobia?
Q. Like the name of this question suggests, I have textophobia, a condition that is characterized by an irrational fear of certain textures and fabrics, or at least that is what google will tell you. Really, I don't run screaming from polyester or curl in terror from leather. It is more like having a nervous reaction when touching certain materials, such as microfibers, some silk, chanel, and similar fabrics. My throat closes up and it becomes difficult to breathe, along with jaw clenching and muscle tensing. It has become severe enough that it interferes with some aspects of my life. My question is if anyone else has this phobia, and if so, what you can do to make it better, if anything? How do you deal with it? I realize that I am… [cont.]
Asked by VincentC - Fri May 1 18:21:38 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are a couple of methods I have learnt about to deal with phobias. One is systematic desensitisation, in which you work out a heirarchy of fear and gradually work up to being able to deal with things. For example, you might start with quickly stroking a piece of silk, and keep doing this say every day until you are comfortable with it. The gradually work up with more and more contact until you can comfortably wrap a piece around you or something. Takes effort and time. There is also a technique known as flooding, which is where you are exposed to your phobia all at once and in a very extreme way. E.g. if suffering from arachnophobia put in a room full of spiders. You would then be left there until you calmed down and were not… [cont.]

Anyhow I was fighting with or running from (I don t remember which) what I was referring to as a vampire I think it was a bald man (but I m not positive I can t remember) I ended up in what seemed like a tent .. it was tightly pulled fabric and whatever and very narrow.. it had spun or was tumbled around and I was laying on my back a bit stunned when whatever was chasing me put its hands on my stomach and its head and growled. A. Vampires as dream symbols indicate people who would take from you or suck your energy. Certainly, since a bald man was chasing you, your subconscious is giving you a message of your issues surrounding a bald man. The tent with its tightly pulled fabric gave me an image of a cocoon, and wishing to feel protected somehow.

When sewing a garment how do you sew on bias tape?
Q. I am sewing a child's apron. The pattern calls for 1/4 inch double fold bias tape to be stitched around the edges. It looks simple enough but I am having trouble stiching it properly and neatly. I have to fold the tape over the edge of the fabric and then stitch that down. How do I make sure the fabric and tape stay in place? Several times I have fed the whole thing through the machine only to find that the fabric slipped out of the binding because it wasn't stitched into the fold. Also, how do I make a straight stitch? The tape is so narrow I have no room and I don't know how to make sure the machine makes a straight line. Can anyone help? Is Steam a Seam like Stitch Witchery (the iron down tape)?
Asked by twinmom - Fri Jan 11 08:05:47 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Other techniques for getting the bias to stay put while sewing include: --Collins WashAwayWonder Tape, a double-stick tape on a release carrier... stick down the tape to one fabric, pull the paper liner, stick the other fabric down. Disappears in the first wash. --Elmer's School Glue and similar glues that are wash-outable. I'd suggest putting down a plastic bag under the fabric, as some always goes through. Also disappears in the wash. --A bias foot: (there are many similar available) --french binding, typically used on a quilt but works fine for garments and it's dead easy and you can make your own bias easily: Tutorial on sewing commercial double fold bias tape: Don't give up! It definitely gets easier!!!

Tell me what you think? Story/kinda a character overview?
Q. I wrote this to be mostly like a character overview and it turned into a story a little bit. I'm probably going to change the formatting but please tell me what you think of it! Parts of Jayne Feet: pink toe-nails over pale purple dead skin cells. Peach toned skin, just as soft as a peach also (boys died to feel a peach that way). They suffocate in the ocean's white sand, only her knobby little ankles can breathe, maybe a pink toe or two also. Legs: too skinny, prickly with goose bumps, hairs like a juvenile porcupine (she shaved them just 3 days ago). Half way up on the right shin a small cut scabbed over and slightly picked at. Knees with no folded skin, no faces of an old man, they were bent slightly, swaying with the wind. Little… [cont.]

A. First off, you have excellent description. I know exactly what she looks like. But that's just it - you don't want your reader to know *exactly* how your character looks. And with this description, you've set up a lot of material for Jayne to be called a Mary Sue. I just need to point out: 1. You've made every part of her irresistable to boys 2. Her only flaws are bruise, a cut on her leg and some purplish skin around her toes. 3. You describe too much useless information such as the color of her nails 4. From her side view, she doesn't look her age. Now, it's not bad at all to have your character have Mary Sue traits. It's like sugar. Too much is bad for you, too little is boring. I don't think this is the type of character… [cont.]
