How do a change a knitting pattern if I'm not felting?
Q. I found this wonderful pattern and was wondering how to I change it if I'm not felting. (for example is says cast on 135 stitches)
Asked by Hannah W - Fri May 21 19:59:06 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Start with a swatch by casting on 20 stitches and knitting it until you get a square, keeping track of how many rows. From your swatch you can determine how many stitches you will need to cast on to get the same size finished pattern as the felted piece. Chances are you will need to knit it on very small needles to get similar results.

I want to start felting, but I don't have a felting needle. Do I need to buy one or can I use something else?
Q. I have watched videos and read tutorials, and it seems like it's just a long fragile need. lol Do I need to buy a specific felting needle, or can I substitute it with something else? Please inform me.

A. Yes, a special barbed felting needle is a must for needle felting, but did you know that you can also do felting without needles? Just use "Le Chat" soap, lots of warm water and do the rubbing by hand!

How much should it cost to get the under felting in a roof repaired?
Q. I have had a survey back from a house I am wanting to buy. Its 1935 terrace (brick). The survey says that the under-felt needs repair. It is old and has a few small patches in it. There is no sign of water leaking through -it says the tiles will need to be relaid on new underlay in due course. It has been suggested that if I buy the house that I would need to get it fixed in the next 2 -3 year. How much would i expect to pay to get that fixed in the Uk - I am based in Bristol, and would they have to do it externally (and therefore I assume need scafolding)? Thank you very much!

A. Your best bet would be to get detailed estimates from at least 4 builders

How do I attach I-Cord to gusset and side of bag I am felting?
Q. I want to attach so that it won't come off the bag with wear. I will put the gusset on with the mattress stitch. Any suggestions?
Asked by ELLIEP - Mon Feb 18 11:49:58 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. my question to you is have you already felted the bag. If you didn't you can do what I have done before. I made my own i cord with a loom in the same color and wool that I used to make the bag. I then crochet the i cord using slip stitches and felted the whole thing together. This way the i cord felts with the bag and won't wear. I wish I had a picture however, I gave the bag away to Christmas grab bag.

Why is my wool felting coming out too fuzzy?
Q. This has to do with the craft of felting wool, it has nothing to do with store bought wool or shoes or whatever else.
Asked by pdw901 - Thu Aug 28 21:28:26 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Are you talking about making felt from knitted wool, are you talking about the felt that sometimes comes in shoes, or are you talking about some other felt product? By 'coming out too fuzzy', do you mean when you wash it? Or do you mean when you use it? If so, what kind of use? There are hundreds of different ways to use felt. Please be more specific. Thanks!

What is the best kind of wool to use for needle felting.?
Q. i love to make tiny needle felted animals. the wool i am using (just some stuff from JoAnn's) takes a while to felt and doesn't get extremely firm. i want a wool that felts quickly, gets very firm, and is not too expensive. i have heard romney wool is very good. are there any others?

A. You'll be wanting washed and carded wool. You can usually find some of this stuff locally. Visit a sheep farm. You can also get it from eBay pretty cheap or you could put up a wanted ad on Craig's list for sheep or llama wool. Make certain to say washed and carded, you don't want a smelly fleece sitting around the house.

doctor kept felting my throat and asked me to take a blood test?
Q. well last week i went to the doctor for my annual check up, and she began to feel my throat, like my neck, and she kept pushing on it and saying that she wanted me to take a blood test because she thinks that something in my throat is making me gain weight. does anyone know what this might be? she had an accent so i didn't really understand what it was and i didn't want her to feel bad, so i didn't ask again. could this be some sort of disease or condition? if it is could it be curable?
Asked by Girl15 - Tue Jan 5 23:02:02 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. She was most likely checking your thyroid gland. The thyroid is a gland located in the front of your neck that controls how quickly the body burns energy, makes proteins, and controls how sensitive the body should be to other hormones. An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) can cause a person to gain weight.

Has anybody used a felting needle tool?
Q. Your opinions on it? i.e. - did it leave any gaping holes in your fabric? - is it really permanent? - better than threading on your applique by hand? is it only used for wool roving or can it be used for felt on felt?
Asked by chicken nuggets - Sun Apr 26 17:04:24 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes, I've used them. And they work just fine. But as any tool, they do have limitations, including that of the skill of the operator. The tool is only a tool -- depends to a large extent on the person using it. You can try felt on felt, but remember that you need to have some loose fibres which you are going to push into the other fabric. If the felt is too felted, you won't get any meshing. You might have to put a very thin layer of wool roving between them and work from both sides, if possible. I would also finish with wet-felting for a more finished and complete job. The needle is great to tack things down, until you can get a more solid and permanent join made.

How much does knitted wool shrink when felting? ?
Q. I'm looking to add a zipper and I'm curious as to how much larger I should make the zipper opening before felting.
Asked by joda - Tue Sep 23 18:18:11 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Wool can shrink by as much as one third of its original size. but it really is best to knit a swatch, and felt it. Different wool shrinks at different rates, and there can even be a variation between different colours of the same yarn.

Has anyone made a butter-churn style hand washer? I want to use it for felting hats I have made.?
Q. Similar to the Bamix or Presawash machines that were selling some years ago. I have tried to buy one of these second-hand, but can't find one.

A. I haven't made one, but it sounds like a great idea. I just have no clue where to buy an old butter churn. Maybe you could get a small barrel with a lid somewhere and make it yourself? Or what about those big plastic buckets that they sell at places like Home Depot. They have tight fitting lids and wouldn't leak. Then you could fashion the plunger part from a smaller lid and some type of broom handle. I'm going to be giving this one a lot of thought. I may try to make one now that you got me going on the idea.

(I, to am a scarf junkie. lol) EDIT you probably should widen and lengthen it. and you can still felt something you've crocheted as long as the yarn you use it 100%wool and you use a tighter stitch
