Quilting is a sewing method done to join two or more layers of material together to make a thicker padded material. A quilter is the name given to someone who works at quilting. Quilting can be done by hand, by sewing machine, or by a specialist longarm quilting system. The process of quilting uses a needle and thread to join two or more layers of material together to make a quilt. Typical quilting is done with three layers: the top fabric or quilt top, batting or insulating material and backing material. The quilter's hand or sewing machine passes the needle and thread through all layers and then brings the needle back up. The process is repeated across the entire piece where quilting is wanted. A rocking, straight or running stitch is commonly used and these stitches can be purely functional or decorative and elaborate. Quilting is done to create bed spreads, art quilt wall hangings, clothing, and a variety of textile products. Quilting can make a project thick, or with dense quilting, can raise one area so that another stands out. HistoryFrom Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "Quilting" Why is it so important to wash the fabric for quilting before you cut it? Q. Why is it sop important to wash the fabric for quilting before you cut it? Asked by ashleyg - Sat Jun 24 00:11:29 2006 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments A. There are two schools of thought on this. I personally do NOT prewash my fabric before making a quilt, and many people, including professional quilters, also do not. Others (including other professional quilters) insist on prewashing every piece of fabric. If you have a dark or bright color, especially red or purple, or if the fabric is hand dyed or a batik, you should test it for color fastness. Blot with a piece of damp white cotton and see if it picks up any color. Or you can cut a piece and put it in a small dish of water with some liquid soap. If the water discolors, you should prewash. The better quality quilting fabrics are less likely to transfer color, except batiks, which are still prone to color transfer. If you don't prewash,… [cont.] Answered by swbiblio - Mon Jun 26 21:58:41 2006 I Need to seal a concrete floor in a basement used as a quilting studio, what is best choice? Q. My basement floor is unsealed, it produces a dust like substance. I use the space as a quilting studio and this dust gets on my batting and fabrics. I cleaned the floor repeatedly but the "dust" problem just comes back. Is this a by product of concrete curing? The house is only 5 years old. Asked by Kay A - Wed Jan 17 11:05:03 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. One of the best and most durable ways to seal a concrete floor is with epoxy paint there are several on the market some even have peaces of color you sprinkle on while the paint is still wet that make a very attractive finish. Q. I need tutorials, materials that i need... I have got no clue about quilting but it looks like fun so im going to try it out. Video tutorials would be apreciated! I need step by step help! Asked by mia.loveu - Sun Dec 21 07:51:11 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. There are two terrific free 'learn to quilt' sites on the web, with lots of pictures but no videos. Both of these start out with what equipment you'll need and how to use it safely, and go on from there. 'About.com' has great 'beginner' patterns, and the Quilters Cache has one of the best quilt block libraries around. If you find you need a video on a particular topic, 'expertvillage' has dozens to choose from. The very best way to learn, though, is to take a class through your park district, a fabric store, local adult education, etc. - you can save yourself a lot of aggravation. Happy quilting, and welcome to the addiction! Answered by Chirp - Sun Dec 21 11:49:09 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Quilting"
