What does it mean when it says a main export commodity of a country is 'machinery and transport equipment'
Q. What is machinery and transport equipment? Give an example of what this is. Information from the CIA world factbook.
Asked by Iskandar - Thu Jun 19 21:35:22 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It means that the particular country makes it's money by exporting equipment and transport equipment. Machinery could be anything from industrial machines to farm equipment. Transport equipment can be anything from planes and ships to buses and trucks.

Q. I sold $30,000 in business assets(machinery, equipmen t)this year, how would I claim that on my taxes. would it be considered "other income" or "capital gain"? I bought the equipment 5 years ago, the purchase price was $44,000. I sold it in 2008 for $30,000.

A. I am sure you have depreciated those assets over the years since you put in service, so what you do is: You need dispose them, which means enter sale date, sale price, sales expenses (if you have any) and adjusted basis (cost - accumulated depreciation- current year's depreciation= usually computer does this calculation for you) then you will know if you have gain or loss. You need do this by accessing your depreciation worksheet for each asset. If you haven't depreciated them for over the years, you probably should report those on the Form 4797(not capital assets form Schedule D)- sale of business assets. OK?

what machinery and equipment is used in mining and processing wolframite?
Q. wolframite is a tungsten ore
Asked by tate_nda - Tue Aug 1 10:12:10 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I could not locate machinery specific to wolframite or tungsten, so presume that they are mined the same way that other underground metals are. Equipment would include drills to make holes and break up rock and loaders to carry the rock away. You would also need support systems for tunnels and lights and safety equipment for the workers. Processing is done in a handful of places in the world--again I found only generalized descriptions of the process. The websites listed below are of some help.

What kinds of equipment was used in mining in South Africa in the 1880s until now. How has it developed?
Q. I'm doing a project on the history of mining (mostly gold and diamonds) in South Africa and am struggling to find information about the equipment and machinery used in the past when mining in SA first began. Any information or websites about the development in mining technology and equipment would be greatly appriciated.
Asked by Bean - Thu Apr 16 07:39:39 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most of the mining equipment used in the 1880s is very similar to what is used now. The difference is the power source to drive the machinery. Compressed air and water and steam were the main sources, plus animal power (human and beasts of burden). Drills, mechanical shovels have modernized a bit but not all that much. They just now use more electricity and diesel engines for power and traction. Compressed air is still often the preferred source of power for underground tools partly because it is cheap but also because it helps ventilation. But still the machines are made to be heavy and built for long term use, which means ultimately the work is still heavy and requires muscle. Why are so many women afraid of power tools and machinery?
Q. Has anyone else ever noticed how much more timid women are with working around noisy power equipment, guns, and machinery than men are? Do they feel overpowered by this stuff or something? Note: This doesn't apply to all women, as I do know of several women that aren't afraid of these things. Although, most of those I've talked with told me that they were afraid at first and then they got used to it over time.
Asked by Shakes - Thu Dec 25 22:16:06 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I think because women are less physically strong, we're scared, yeah. I'm over it, have used tons of power tools, my Daddy's awesome with tools/building so we've spent a bunch of time together doing things he enjoys, which meant I learned to use power tools. Turns men on when women use power tools, I wonder why that is? Even my Daddy loves when my Mamma uses a saw or something haha Yet, he gets pretty angry when we're out int he summer and people walk by the house and stare while I'm working haha =o) The table saw, I still have never once used that, he warned me it could possibly snap my wrist...that was enough to keep me away from it! o_O

What are the copyright laws on music converting equipment located in public spaces?
Q. Within the context of an academic library, are you breaking copyright laws if you openly provide your patrons (i.e. accessible to everyone) the equipment to transfer formats (i.e. LP records to CDs) and, like a copy machine, simply place a sign beside the equipment that warns the user of un-lawful usage of the machinery? Does this sign cover your academic institution from copyright infringement charges? If not, then what copyright laws are being violated?
Asked by andi396 - Tue Apr 22 15:05:01 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I think it probably would, since I'm pretty sure that copyright laws would allow the owner of an LP to record it onto CD. This is provided no one in the library was actually aware of any actual infringement. Dana (attorney)

What exactly is a chiller plate in a restaurant or bar?
Q. Does it refer to the metal surface that upside down beer glasses are placed on to keep the rims frosty, or is it the piece of machinery/equipment under the bar that produces the cooling effect? ... or something else?

A. It's a square metal thing at the bottom of an ice well. The metal plate has tubing inside it. Fountain drinks run through the ice cold plate in a back and forth pattern to chill the liquid before it comes out of the gun.

What is the best piece of equipment to remove a large quantity of brush?
Q. Looking to remove 30-40 large bushes (6-8+ ft tall, trunk stalks about 1" in diameter ea max, growing around larger trees we want to save, pretty rocky area) and wondering if there's a piece of rental machinery an untrained person could bring onto their property to accomplish this as easily as possible. If this were only a few bushes I would use a winch and/or rope tied to the truck but am looking for a better approach, if one exists. Thanks!

A. If you could get a big tractor in there with a beater it would take out 2" trees out in a second. But with rocks and trying to save other trees you may be stuck with using a hand lopper. Sounds like a lot of work without being able to run over it with a tractor.

How to get toned up abs without any type of gym equipment?
Q. I hate going to the gym so I wanna start working out from home. I wanna tone my abs but I dont know what to do without any machinery. Also I dont wanna hafta to a billion crunches. Any suggestions?
Asked by blah - Mon Feb 2 14:09:31 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The thing is generally you already have good abs. What you need to do is lose a bit of weight. Crunches and work outs don't define your abs they only strengthen the muscles for actual use. I would suggest jogging or running of some kind. It strenghthens your entire body including the abs, keeps you fit, and helps you to lose weight so you have more defined abs. Just remember you don't have to work out the abs you have to lose body fat.

What is the maximum amount of weight that modern machinery can move?
Q. Such as in terms of construction equipment like a crane, what is the maximum amount of weight that can be lifted by any existing machine?
Asked by Jack K - Tue May 29 17:01:12 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A crane's limitation is defined as metre-tonnes, because it is the moment that creates the limitation of the crane lift. A crane does the same amount of work to lift 50 tonnes at 10 metres as it does to lift 100 tonnes at 5 metres. That being said; I believe the largest single lift was perfromed by one of forty-two Lampson Tranis Lift IIs in Corpus Christi TX. The actual load was 1000 tonnes. And this just happens to be a MOBILE unit, on top of everything else!

Asked by doublebiggulp - Thu Mar 5 04:45:05 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Lay down all the known information first. We'll do equipment 1st, then machinery. Equipment - Cost Beginning $135,000 Sold off (?) Ending $44,000 From this, you can tell that cost of equipment sold is $91,000 Equipment - Accum. depn. Beginning $56,500 Curren depn $9,500 Disposed (?) Ending $4,000 From this, you can tell that accum. depn. of equipment sold is $62,000. Now calculate the loss/gain on disposal: Cost of equipment sold $91,000 Accum. depn. of equipment sold ($62,000) Net book value of equipment sold $29,000 Sale proceeds $28,000 Loss on sale of equipment $1,000 Machinery - Cost Beginning $141,000 Purchased $46,000 Sold off (?) Ending $98,600 From this, you can tell that cost of machinery sold is $88,400. Machinery - Accum. [cont.]

Vegans, Veges do you eat food which has been "Made on equipment shared with Milk, eggs, meat, etc"?
Q. I've encountered this a few times when reading labels..I usually stay away from food where it cleary states that or anything similiar..but i'm not sure if i'm making too much a deal out of it. Since i'm sure they clean the machinery/equipment, or atleast I'd think so. I have sushi which is completely vegetarian but it states "Made on equipment shared with milk, eggs, shellfish". Would you/have you eaten anything which is completely vegetarian or vegan but has such labels? Why or why not?
Asked by D.O... - Tue Apr 1 04:45:46 2008 - - 15 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes I do. The reason they give you this information is is to cover their backs and avoid litigation in the event of someone with an allergy ingesting a microscopic bit of nut, egg etc. I've never seen a label which says shared with meat; meat is not a common allergen the way eggs, milk, nuts and seafood are. All equipment is cleaned, the information is there for allergy sufferers, not vegetarians, to avoid court cases.
