I am buying chiffon fabric as a gift how much should i get? how much lining?
Q. I am buying some silk chiffon fabric as a gift for a 2nd year fashion design student how many yards should i get so she can make a dress or something nice and since its a sheer fabric how much lining should i get? do i even need lining? is there anything else i need?

A. 4 yards is a good amount. Chiffon will have to go over an actual garment fabric, so you could go with a nice matching satin. .

A. That was probably hemmed with a serger rolled hem, or with a three thread overlock, See: (drop down to May 8, 2007) Personally, I find it just about as fast to roll hem by hand as it is for me to set up a machine... put an old movie on the tv and the hem is done by the time the movie's over. Use silk thread for easiest hemming. And then there are baby hems done on a sewing machine: Chiffon is a slippery character to work with, particularly if you're dealing with something like a circular skirt, where you'll have every possible grainline, It's almost impossible to hem absolutely evenly, but the effect should be nice -- even if not perfect. Whether you use machine or hand techniques, it can be helpful to use a good quality… [cont.]

What is a good, moderately stiff fabric I can line my chiffon dress with?
Q. I purchased a few yards of polyester chiffon and am planning to make a flowy dress with it. Although I want it to be very free-moving and sheer, I want the bust to be slightly stiffer so it can support the breasts. When I say stiff, I don't mean heavy fabrics like denim and etc. I'm looking for fabric that is feminine and would look good with a chiffon overlay. Do any of you guys have recommendations/suggestio ns/tips? All would be greatly appreciated.

A. If this is going to be strapless, you need something like coutil for underlining the bodice. And you're going to need boning and an inner waist belt besides. A good place to look for construction information is Susan Khalje's Bridal Couture. Also:

Set in wrinkles in chiffon?
Q. I ordered a dress and there is no time to exchange it at this point. The dress has wrinkles that seem to be set into the chiffon fabric. I have used an iron, I have used a Tobi steamer, I have even washed the thing. Is there anything that will relax this fabric?
Asked by Mrs_O - Wed Jul 22 15:55:06 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Maybe the wrinkles are supposed to be there? Put the dress on a hanger and hang it up at eye level then step back and look at the dress from about ten feet...the wrinkles look way out of place...or do they kinda flow with the design? Sounds like you have done all that you can to get them out other than taking them to a dry cleaner and having them professionally pressed out...then you take a risk of having the dress ruined. If you don't take it to an outfit that is accustomed to working with chiffon...it will get ruined.

I am sewing a bias cut A-line skirt and the side seams are not hanging flat and smooth ?
Q. I have made a lovely chiffon fabric A-line bias cut skirt, the seams do not 'hang' smooth and straight when I put the skirt on to do hemline. What can I do to straighten out the seams, it seems like the further down the 'A-line' the bigger the problem. The top part of the seams lay well, but as the 'A' gets more angled the bigger the 'problem'- HELP

A. Chiffon has quite a loose weave. It is also very light. You need to sew it using a fine seam that is self-finished, rather than an open seam, so that the seam allowances don't show. Because it will fray easily, you need to do this as soon as possible after the first fitting. For the first fitting, baste the seams with a small hand stitch in fine silk thread. Baste seams from top to bottom, and leave the bottom end unfinished, with a good 12" tail. Let the garment hang for a few days before trying it on... This is especially important for bias cut garments. When you cut on th bias, unless you cut the pieces correctly, the fabric will 'corkscrew' round the body. Is this what is happening? If so, you need to re-cut the front or back… [cont.]

Which is fabric is cheaper in price? chiffon or georgette?
Q. In terms of Price, which of the two fabric is cheaper? and in terms of quality and visual effect, which do you think is the better material?
Asked by mrm31 - Thu Feb 11 01:56:37 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Price is pretty much equal, given equal qualities, Which to choose depends on the effect you want. There's no better or worse here, just "different'. I'd sooner sew georgette than chiffon, if that makes any difference to you. And I refuse to sew that nasty polyester chiffon, period.

Looking for bridesmaid dresses, any recommendations?
Q. I'm going shopping for bridesmaid dresses this weekend. I wanted to find 5 different colored dresses for my 5 bridesmaids. The dresses should come in chiffon fabric and have a wide selection of colors. Does anyone have a dress maker they can recommend?

A. alfred angelo and the dessy group (which includes after six, dessy and alfred sung) all have lots of styles which come in tons of colors. when you get to the bridal shop, ask to see their swatch books before you start trying on dresses. that will give you an idea for what colors the difference designers use, which fabrics of their come in lots of colors, etc. also, I DON'T recommend buying the fabric and having the dresses made. that does NOT make it cheaper unless whoever is the seamstress will work for free, but even then, fabric is expensive. my friend did that for her wedding (which I was in) and it ended up costing each girl $75 for the fabric. plus the stress of watching my poor mother make two of the dresses (which she never… [cont.]

Decorations for Pure Romance Party?
Q. I am having a pure romance (sex toy) party this weekend and need some decoration ideas. This is a classy one...not trashy. All women too! So far I was thinking pink chiffon fabric, pink candles, cushions on floor, and feathers in vases...anything else?
Asked by catlover - Thu Apr 16 13:13:58 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, please don't take offense, but I think you're confusing making it a classy party with making it a potentially overly-seductive-sexual atmosphere. The fact that it's an adult toy party kind of needs to be offset by something other than romantic, sensual lighting and decorations in order to keep your guests comfortable. You can still have a classy party, but think champagne, appetizers, and tame party games rather than candles and feathers. Just my opinion as a woman.

What fabric is most commonly used for clothing in China?
Q. Like, in America, denim is prevalent for pants and knits are really popular for tops. Is chiffon popular in china? What other fabrics? Sorry if this is a weird question
Asked by {+Ozzy+} - Sun May 9 11:20:02 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Name the fabric type and you'll find it in China. Blue jeans (denim) is very popular, as are cotton tee shirts. Middle-aged to senior citizen women tend to wear a lot of polyester shirts. Aging men wear rayon type shirts. Chiffon is popular among young women, as is lace and lots of things that "sparkle." Glitter, rhinestones, sequins, lace, chiffon, etc. seem to adorn even the most everyday type clothing. I used to think it was kind of strange since the American culture seems to save such sparkle for special occasions. However, as time went on, I began to understand that each day is a celebration of life and that each day SHOULD have sparkle! Brocade and silk are not as common as people think, but they are not rare. Twill,… [cont.]

A. OK if you are short of funds, an easy way is the way I did it. I got a plain ring binder and using spray adhesive covered it with the stuff you use for the middle of quilts. Then covered it with my wedding dress material. I made put strips of the ribbons down the spine and round the edge. I used craft glue for these. Then I got some plastic page holders that students use, and paper in various coloured themes from the wedding. I glued photo's onto these, just a dab at each corner. At angles looks good. From there, I used the computer to print out a guest list, even a menu from the barbeque and family dinner lol. Use your imagination. I even put the frill off his shirt down the centre of the front cover lol. Good luck and congratulations,… [cont.]

Help! Sewing disaster!! TEN POINTS :)?
Q. I am in the production of ANything Goes this year as one of Renos Angels! Opening night is friday and I have to put the finishing touches on the dress i made for the play. I am wondering if i could have some advice on how to put a hem on chiffon fabric that has sparkles on it. I don't think you can iron it and the only way i know how to put a hem on is to measure, pin, iron the crease and then sew it. So I need help!!! Be as detailed as possible!! Thanks :)

A. Try pinking the edge and see if that will do. If not: If you've got a serger, set up for a rolled hem or a narrow three thread overlock and get it done rapidimente : If you want to take it slow and easy, you can roll hem by hand -- put on an old movie and start rolling and whipping down the hem: If you've got a sewing machine handy, for costume purposes, you can probably just zigzag the edges of the chiffon, letting the zig fall off the edge of the fabric. Play with the thread tension, and you'll get a pretty good looking rolled hem that won't be couture, but sure is fast. Helps if you've got a presser foot with a "rudder" that you can bump the cut or folded edge of the fabric against as you sew -- something like: Or if… [cont.]

A. Linen or wool would be period. A good grade of cotton muslin could substitute. Chiffon, fwiw, is a pain to work with, both cutting and sewing. If you insist, it really needs to be cut on paper For ease of sewing, I'd use a lightweight stable knit that drapes well. You can save a lot of hemming that way, too, on a costume. 's Dress
