A. Do not dry it in the dryer...hand wash it in mild soap and cool water, woolite would be best. Do not twist it, squeeze it and put it on a towel. Roll the towel and press to get the remaining excess water out and then lay it flat on a different towel to dry. Same process for sweaters.

Can I raise an alpaca in my backyard?
Q. So recently I went to the zoo with my friends and we saw the alpacas and they seem like really nice care free animals. We found an alpaca online we would really like to purchase and keep in our backyard. We'd make a barn with heating and food supply. Does this seem at all reasonable? Having an alpaca is my dream. Please help!
Asked by Laura - Sun Jun 8 22:33:44 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You have to check the town requirements for large animals. Do ALOT of research before you do anythig...alpaca's and llamas are cute but they need care, especially in the heat, which can kill them. Cold is not the problem. You will also need 2 animals, since they are herd animals. A goat or a sheep might do, but that is like you having a roomate that speaks only french and you don't at all.

I want to know how to get started in processing alpaca fiber into home insulation,?
Q. I want to process my alpaca fiber into batts of wall insulation. I know it is naturally fire retardant and the only chemical I can think of that it needs is Borate to keep the moths out of it. My problem is where do I start with getting it to meet the codes here in California, USA? I know that before I can sell this as a viable home insulation that I need to have it pass various government tests and that is where I need help, how do I get this process started? Is their a book on doing this? I know that their is a company in (I believe southern Ca.) that takes ends of denim material and processes this cotton into home insulation but they also had to pass the governments tests to be allowed to sell it, how did they do it? Where can I get merchandise made out of alpaca fur?
Q. my friend has an obsession with alpacas...her b-days next week. i looked online. i want alpaca fur mittens or something but everythings really expensive. any ideas? btw shes 14.
Asked by dancer - Mon May 11 16:05:40 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Compared to cheap products made from sheeps wool, cotton or even acrylic, alpaca products are expensive. What you get is something really special, high-quality, great comfort, and it lasts forever treated the right way. Alpaca fiber is produced less than sheeps wool, cotton, acrylic, and so on, so will be more expensive. If you want to give her something special, buy alpaca mittens. If you just want to give her something ordinary, buy something else.

How should I shrink this sweater? 50% Acrylic 25% Alpaca 25% Wool?
Q. Hi everyone, I found some other answers on how to shrink wool and cotton sweaters; most said to wash in warm water and agitate. I'm wondering if that process would work for a sweater that's 50% Acrylic, 25% Alpaca, and 25% Wool. It's a good sweater but it's really baggy. What should I do? Thanks in advance! I'd like it not to felt if at all possible. also, how will the acrylic content of the blend affect any attempt to shrink?

What do I do if my alpaca is not growing?
Q. I have three alpacas that are at least three months old. One of them is really a lot smaller than the others. He does eat on his own and we supplement with hand feeding. Any ideas of what we can do to help this little guy grow and be healthy?
Asked by azlawson1975 - Sun Mar 29 11:07:11 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You should try to get a fecal sample to your veterinarian for testing. Alpacas can have parasites that slow their growth rates. They can also have many other problems as well. I would find a veterinarian that treats alpacas and get to know them well.

A. Alpaca fur is NOT machine washable nor should they be dry cleaned. If extensive cleaning is required it is best to take it to a professional furrier. This can be quite expensive. Upkeep is talc and a good brushing with a dog brush. Thoroughly clean by using DRY oatmeal, cornmeal or talcum powder. But never immerse your rug in water. Occasionally you may want to "freshen" your rug, by laying it out in the direct sunlight and it will automatically fluff out to it's original luster. For liquid spills: after blotting up as much of the spill as possible, rub with cornmeal and brush. Water will Shrink it..use a hairdryer on low. A. Do you mean lama or llama? Alpacas and llamas are two separate types of animal, but they are actually both belong to the genus "lama". Although llamas and alpacas are both members of the camelid family, there are many differences between them. First of all is their appearance. Alpacas are much smaller in stature than llamas. Alpacas have samller, pointed ears, while llamas have long banana shaped ears. Alpacas body shape is different, their backs are slightly rounded and their tails are sloped down from their backs. A llama should have a flat, level back with the tail placed right off the end of the back. Next is their fiber. Alpacas can be huacaya or suri and the fiber is generally very soft and abundant. Llamas can be light, medium,… [cont.]
