Acrylic fibers are synthetic fibers made from a polymer (Polyacrylonitrile) with an average molecular weight of ~100,000, about 1900 monomer units. To be called acrylic in the U.S, the polymer must contain at least 85% acrylonitrile monomer. Typical comonomers are vinyl acetate or methyl acrylate. The Dupont Corporation created the first acrylic fibers in 1941 and trademarked them under the name "Orlon". ProductionThe polymer is formed by free-radical polymerization in aqueous suspension. The fiber is produced by dissolving the polymer in a solvent such as N,N-dimethylformamide or aqueous sodium thiocyanate, metering it through a multi-hole spinnerette and coagulating the resultant filaments in an aqueous solution of the same solvent (wet spinning) or evaporating the solvent in a stream of heated inert gas (dry spinning). Washing, stretching, drying and crimping complete the processing. Acrylic fibers are produced in a range of deniers, typically from 2 to 15 as cut staple or as a 500,000 to 1 million filament tow. End uses include sweaters, hats, hand-knitting yarns, rugs, awnings, boat covers, and upholstery; the fiber is also used as a precursor for carbon fiber. Production of acrylic fibers is centered in the Far East, declining in Europe and now shut down (except for precursor) in the U.S. Former U.S. brands of acrylic were Acrilan (Monsanto), Creslan (American Cyanamid), and Orlon (DuPont). Answered by voicefromparis - Mon Mar 1 14:45:31 2010 Which type of fake nail tip is best? Q. I've never gotten fake tips before so I don't know which will be the best. Like which stays longest and doesn't chip as easily? Acrylic, fiber, gel, or silk? Asked by superswimmerbabe - Sun Jan 10 02:49:46 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I prefer gel nails. I find that the nail technician does a better job with gel as it doesnt dry as quick as acryllic and she has a chance to shape them and buff them properly. For your first time I would recommend getting a slighly natural length with a round or square shape. The shorter they are the longer they are likely to last. Answered by Jennifer - Wed Jan 13 13:46:08 2010 When you're knitting, is there anyway to make acrylic yarn soften?
Q. I'm still a novice knitter, but I'm making a scarf for someone. She picked out the yarn for herself, thinking only of the colour (a really rather pretty shade of blue that fades into purple). The trouble is, it's one hundred percent acrylic and I don't like the way it feels. I've got about three, very-close-to-flawless feet so far, so it seems like it's too late to start over. Is there a way to wash it so that it's softer? (Also, is knitting with natural fibers easier than knitting with synthetics/blends?) Asked by Noble Poet - Fri Jan 25 00:41:12 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. I have probably knitted only about 5% compared to the 95% I've crocheted, but I think I can answer this anyway. What others have said so far is basically correct. I prefer natural fibers, like wool and cotton. (Yes, you CAN knit and crochet with cotton, though it's not stretchy and you have to be careful.) I have two suggestions: 1) wash the finished article with fabric softener 2) (for next time) pre-wear the yarn by running it back and forth through some sort of tight rope loop or over the end of a wooden post... the same way you would work a tanned hide to break the fibers slightly and make it more manageable. As I said, I haven't actually worked with acrylic so I don't know if the second suggestion would work.
